PIX11: MANHATTAN, N.Y. – A 58-year-old lady was brutally and shockingly attacked in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon by strangers with a baseball bat. The horrific event happened on Monroe Street close to Market Street at 2:00 p.m. and was caught on video.
Two people approached the woman from behind and hit her with a baseball bat, according to the NYPD. The woman was taken right away to a local hospital for treatment after sustaining bruises on her back and legs.
The terrifying incident was described to PIX11 News by witnesses. “They pushed the woman to the ground and began striking her with a bat. “I heard her scream like a terrifying scream,” recalled a 23-year-old onlooker who was there during the assault.
Social media users posted a video of the event, showing the two assailants racing to catch up to the woman from behind. They can be seen repeatedly hitting her lower torso with the bat and giving her a headshot. Both locals and internet users have expressed anger and alarm about the video.
Speaking to PIX11 News, the victim’s son described the pain his family is feeling. He noted his mother’s physical and mental injuries, saying, “She is shocked, she is scared, and in a lot of pain.”
No one had been taken into custody about the incident as of Wednesday. The NYPD requests that anybody with knowledge come forward as they actively look into the event.
