Read Time:56 Second

Ukrainian soldiers paid a heartfelt tribute to fallen New Zealand soldier Dominic Abelen, performing a traditional Māori haka to honour his sacrifice. Known by his call sign “Tolkien,” Abelen, 28, of Māori descent, was killed in combat near Vuhledar, Donetsk, in August 2022. His body was recently returned to Ukraine, where he was posthumously awarded the “Ukraine above all” medal and the “For military merits” honour.

A veteran of the Iraq conflict, Abelen joined Ukraine’s International Legion in 2022, driven by a commitment to defend freedom. The haka, performed by fellow soldiers from the Defence Intelligence International Legion, underscored the deep respect and camaraderie shared among fighters.

Abelen’s bravery and dedication have left a lasting impact, symbolising the global solidarity in Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty. His story highlights the sacrifices made by international volunteers and the enduring bonds forged in the face of adversity.

This poignant tribute not only honours Abelen’s legacy but also shines a light on the courage of those standing with Ukraine. His sacrifice will be remembered as a testament to unity and resilience in the pursuit of justice.
