Nepal Battles Devastating Floods and Landslides

Kathmandu, Nepal – September 28, 2024: Nepal is grappling with widespread destruction caused by relentless monsoon rains, which have resulted in at least 129 fatalities and left 62 people missing. The heavy rains have triggered significant landslides and floods, causing chaos throughout the country. While rescue operations are ongoing, authorities are concerned that the death toll could rise as more affected areas become reachable.

Nepal Police have reported that 86 individuals have sustained injuries due to these catastrophic events, which began Friday evening. The torrential downpours have also disrupted infrastructure, blocking major highways and isolating many regions. Officials estimate that it will take at least three to four days to clear the roads, further slowing relief and rescue efforts.

In response to the crisis, Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology has mandated the closure of all schools for three days, starting Sunday. Additionally, university exams that were scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed.

Flooded streets, submerged buildings, and stranded residents have become a common sight across the country. Although emergency services are doing their best, the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local authorities. Many families are struggling to find shelter and basic necessities, while the heavy rains show no signs of letting up.

Although monsoon-induced disasters are not new to Nepal, this year’s floods and landslides have been particularly severe, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather. As Nepal mourns the loss of lives, the nation prepares for even more challenging days ahead.
