NATO Considers Article 5 Over Russian Threats

Read Time:56 Second

NATO may soon be forced to invoke Article 5 of its Mutual Defense Clause as Russia escalates hybrid warfare against Western nations, warned Bruno Kahl, Germany’s foreign intelligence chief. Speaking at a DGAP think tank event in Berlin on Wednesday, Kahl expressed concerns over Moscow’s increasing use of sabotage and other aggressive tactics.

“Russia’s intensified use of hybrid measures raises the likelihood that NATO will eventually invoke Article 5,” said Kahl.

Article 5 commits NATO members to collective defense if one is attacked, treating it as an assault on all. Historically, it has been invoked only once, following the 9/11 attacks. However, Russia’s recent acts of sabotage, including cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns, could push the alliance to act.

Kahl’s statement highlights mounting unease about Russia’s aggressive posturing and its potential to trigger a broader NATO response. Such a move would signal a significant escalation in tensions, fundamentally altering Europe’s security dynamics.

NATO allies are now closely monitoring these developments, as further provocations could compel the alliance to take unprecedented measures against Moscow.
