Meta Promotes Openness: AI-Created Photos to Have Labels on Facebook, Instagram

Before important events like the November election, Meta, the parent company of social media giants Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, disclosed its plan to label artificial intelligence (AI)-generated photos in an effort to increase transparency and combat disinformation. With this approach, the tech giant hopes to provide viewers more information into where visual material originates from and help them differentiate between human- and AI-generated images on its platforms.

Even though AI-generated photos frequently have a strikingly realistic appearance, they are created by computer software programs rather than by using conventional photographic techniques. In response to worries about possible abuse or fabrication of this kind of material, Meta has promised to prominently mark AI-generated photographs on all of its platforms.

In a recent blog post, Meta’s president of global relations, Nick Clegg, underlined the company’s dedication to openness. He said that photos created using Meta AI would henceforth have a prominent label that read “Imagined with AI.” This action is a component of Meta’s larger plan to promote openness and provide consumers the ability to determine the legitimacy of the visual information they come across on the internet.

Beyond only labeling AI-generated photos, Meta is actively working with industry colleagues to develop industry-wide technological standards for efficiently identifying this kind of information.
