Meta Bans Russian State Media Outlets on Facebook and Instagram

Read Time:48 Second

Meta has said that Russian state-run media sites like RT and Rossiya Segodnya will not be allowed on any of its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. The ban will go into action in a few days and is meant to stop activities that involve foreign meddling.

Meta told Engadget in a statement, “After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets.” They used examples of dishonest behaviour to avoid being caught as justification. The Biden administration said that RT was sharing false information to back Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which led to this action.

Limits on Russian media by Meta are not new. In 2022, the company limited their access in Ukraine because the government asked them to. This caused Russia to stop Facebook and call Meta a radical group.

As the ban goes into effect, it shows that Meta is still working to stop fake news and foreign meddling on its platforms.
