Ducati team principal Davide Tardozzi’s colorful commentary suggests only extraordinary circumstances could prevent Martin, who maintains a 19-point advantage, from securing the necessary top-nine finish to claim the 2024 crown.
The Spanish rider’s journey to potential double-championship status – following his 2018 Moto3 triumph – hasn’t been without drama. Despite Francesco Bagnaia’s commanding sprint race victory, Martin’s calculated third-place finish kept his title aspirations firmly intact. This performance exemplifies the consistency that has defined his farewell season with Ducati.
“Jorge has earned his position at the top,” Tardozzi remarked to GPOne, highlighting Martin’s aggressive start in Sepang. “His pace suggests anything below fourth place is nearly impossible – he’s simply too fast to be denied a top-five spot.”
While Bagnaia fought back with pole position and maximum sprint points, the storyline was enriched by Enea Bastianini’s late-race heroics. The outgoing Ducati rider, bound for Tech3 KTM in 2025, showcased his prowess by overtaking Martin for second place in the closing moments. This move not only demonstrated Bastianini’s skill but also intensified his battle with Marc Marquez for third in the championship standings.
Tardozzi particularly praised Bastianini’s resilience: “Even with setup challenges, he performed like a true champion – his performance was remarkable.”
