A manhunt is underway in Birmingham, Alabama, after a mass shooting outside a popular nightlife venue left four people dead and 17 others injured. According to Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond, multiple shooters opened fire on a crowd late Saturday night in the city’s Five Points South district, a bustling area known for its restaurants and bars.
The attackers pulled up to the scene in a vehicle, got out, and began shooting indiscriminately before fleeing. Chief Thurmond confirmed that 21 people were shot, with four succumbing to their injuries. The identities of the shooters remain unknown, and no arrests have been made. “There was a clear target among the victims, and we believe this was a hit,” said Thurmond, suggesting the shooters were paid to kill one person in particular. That person, who was among the dead, has not yet been identified.

Hush owner Ryan Pryor, a retired Birmingham police officer, expressed deep sorrow over the event, noting that several of his patrons were among the victims. “Unfortunately, some of my patrons who were standing on the sidewalk were injured and killed,” Pryor said.

Police and Federal Agencies Investigating
Birmingham police, along with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), are actively investigating the shooting. Multiple shell casings were recovered from the scene, and authorities believe at least one fully automatic weapon, illegal except in rare cases, was used in the attack. Law enforcement is urging local businesses with security cameras to share footage that may aid in the investigation.
During a news conference, police reported that four of the injured are in critical condition and are receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries. Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department stated that authorities arrived on the scene shortly after 11 p.m. and found two adult males and one adult female unresponsive on the sidewalk, suffering from gunshot wounds. These victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth victim died later at UAB Hospital, where 12 of the injured were treated.
Ongoing Search for Suspects

Chief Thurmond added that investigators are working to determine whether anyone at the scene returned fire, as well as to identify the exact number of shooters involved. “This was a deliberate attack,” Thurmond said. “We have no reason to believe that this was random.”
