A power struggle between Ukraine’s defense leadership has sparked international concern, as Western allies warn the dispute could impact crucial weapons deliveries. The controversy centers on Defense Minister Rustem Umerov’s attempt to block the contract extension of Defense Procurement Agency (DPA) director Maryna Bezrukova.
Despite the DPA board’s January decision to extend Bezrukova’s tenure, Umerov challenged the renewal, citing her alleged failure to deliver essential military supplies to troops at the front. This move drew sharp criticism from parliamentarians and anti-corruption groups, who contend that Umerov’s intervention violates Ukrainian law.
The situation has attracted attention from G7 ambassadors, who called for swift resolution to prevent disruption of military aid flows. They stressed the need to maintain good governance standards and align with NATO guidelines to preserve international confidence.
The dispute has escalated to legal channels, with the Anti-Corruption Action Center requesting a National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) investigation into Umerov for potential power abuse. MP Anastasiia Radina has gone further, demanding Umerov’s removal, arguing that his actions compromise the DPA’s autonomy at a crucial moment.
This internal conflict comes at a particularly challenging time for Ukraine, which continues to face sustained Russian attacks. Recent Russian drone campaigns have caused significant infrastructure damage, while a missile strike on a Mykolaiv food facility resulted in two fatalities.
The timing of this leadership crisis raises concerns about Ukraine’s ability to maintain effective defense operations and secure continued international support, as Western partners closely monitor developments in the country’s defense procurement system.
