North Korean leader Kim Jong-un celebrated the final phase of a major housing project in Pyongyang with a dramatic explosion on Sunday. The event, held in the Hwasong district, marked the near-completion of a five-year initiative to build 50,000 apartments in the capital. Kim triggered the blast during a groundbreaking ceremony, attended by a large crowd wearing protective helmets.
The project, part of a broader effort to modernize Pyongyang, has been a key focus since the Party Congress. Kim emphasized its significance, stating that the 10,000-household construction project this year brings the initiative to its final stage. The ceremony coincided with the Day of the Shining Star, the anniversary of his father’s birthday.
In a symbolic gesture, Kim also visited his family’s mausoleum for the first time in four years, paying respects to his father and grandfather. The event underscores North Korea’s commitment to infrastructure development under Kim’s leadership, while also highlighting the regime’s penchant for grand, symbolic displays.
