North Korean leader Kim Jong Un held a security meeting on Monday after claims of South Korean drone incursions into the North, state media reported Tuesday. During the meeting, Kim was briefed on the “serious provocation” from South Korea, which Pyongyang alleges violated its sovereignty. In response, Kim ordered immediate military action to address the situation.
North Korea accused Seoul of sending unmanned drones carrying anti-North Korean leaflets on three occasions within a week, although South Korean officials have not confirmed the claims.
Tensions escalated further when South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff revealed that North Korea had destroyed parts of two roads along the border’s demarcation line. This follows Pyongyang’s recent announcement to cut all road and rail connections with the South. These roads were once seen as symbols of cooperation between the two nations.
Relations between the Koreas have significantly worsened in recent years, with Pyongyang increasing missile tests and harsh rhetoric, particularly against the U.S. and South Korea. Additionally, North Korea has strengthened its military ties with Russia.
Kim Jong Un’s security meeting highlights the growing tension, with North Korea positioning South Korea as its main adversary. The situation raises concerns about potential conflict along the heavily militarized border.
