Kate Middleton’s Journey: The Princess Title Shift

Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

Kate Middleton’s royal titles have evolved since joining the British Royal Family, from Duchess of Cambridge to Princess of Wales. However, one title eluded her despite Prince William’s wishes: Princess Catherine.

Before their 2011 wedding, William reportedly wanted to keep his birth title, preferring “Prince William” over a new dukedom. He also hoped Kate would become “Princess Catherine,” breaking from the tradition where only royals by birth typically use “Princess” with their first names.

Queen Elizabeth II, however, adhered to royal protocols. Despite her power to grant such a title, doing so could have set a precedent for other royals to request similar treatment. Royal expert Kenneth Rose noted rare exceptions, like Princess Alice, but these were for long-serving royals.

To maintain consistency, the Queen followed tradition. Kate became “Princess William of Wales” formally, reflecting her status as William’s spouse without altering the system of title inheritance by birth.

Although “Princess Catherine” didn’t materialize, Kate has held several prestigious titles. She was Duchess of Cambridge for over a decade. Following Queen Elizabeth’s passing in 2022, William and Kate became the Prince and Princess of Wales, a title with rich historical significance once held by Princess Diana.

Kate also holds Scottish and Northern Irish titles: Countess of Strathearn and Lady Carrickfergus, respectively.

While not “Princess Catherine,” Kate’s current titles, especially Princess of Wales, reflect her prominent role in the royal family and her future as queen consort. William and Kate’s preference for a modernized approach to royal life is evident in their parenting and public duties.

As they move closer to the throne, Kate’s titles will continue to evolve, mirroring her dedication to the British monarchy. Though “Princess Catherine” wasn’t meant to be, the legacy of the current Princess of Wales is one of grace and commitment to her royal responsibilities.
