Ahead of the next U.S. election, the FBI has warned of attempts by Iranian hackers to compromise both the Trump and Biden-Harris presidential campaigns. The intrusions, which have been connected to the APT42 group, have mostly taken the form of phishing campaigns that target well-known figures from both sides.
Senior Trump advisor Susie Wiles and unofficial adviser Roger Stone are said to have been immediately impacted. Because Stone’s account was hijacked, hackers were able to send his contacts phishing emails. No successful account breaches connected to the Biden-Harris campaign have been verified by the FBI.
Government agencies collaborated with internet behemoths Microsoft and Google to stop several phishing attempts. Since APT42 has a history of focusing on prominent Americans, worries about more election meddling have been raised. Even while Iran has already been connected to misinformation efforts, Russian and Chinese cyberthreats continue to worry American authorities more.
This development emphasizes the continuous cyberthreats that the U.S. presidential election of 2024 faces as foreign players try to sway the result.
