The iPhone’s satellite connectivity features are expanding, with Apple reportedly adding SpaceX’s Starlink network as an alternative to its existing Globalstar service. The integration appears in iOS 18.3, offering T-Mobile customers access to Starlink’s extensive low Earth orbit satellite network, though Apple hasn’t made an official announcement.
The partnership marks a significant advancement for iPhone users, who can now access broader satellite capabilities including messaging, streaming, and video calls in areas without cellular coverage. While Starlink was previously exclusive to certain Samsung devices, this integration brings its benefits to the iOS ecosystem.
On social media platform X, Elon Musk indicated that current Starlink capabilities include medium-resolution images, music, and podcast streaming, with video streaming planned for future updates. The technology offers improved user experience compared to Globalstar, eliminating the need to point devices skyward for connection.
This development positions Apple more competitively in the growing satellite communications market, alongside rivals like Amazon’s Project Kuiper. Currently, the Starlink integration is limited to U.S. customers, while Globalstar continues to serve multiple international markets.
The collaboration builds on Apple’s initial 2022 satellite features, expanding emergency communication options for users. With T-Mobile beta testers already reporting successful satellite texting capabilities, this three-way partnership between Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile could transform remote communication accessibility.
