In a scary occurrence on Saturday, there was a rapid depressurization on a Korean Air flight, which resulted in the aircraft falling about 26,246 feet and injuring 17 people. The flight in question, KE189, left from Incheon Airport and was traveling to Taichung International Airport in Taiwan, according to the Korea JoongAng Daily.
The Event
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 started to descend quickly about 50 minutes into the flight, which caused serious concerns and an expeditious return to Incheon. The Taipei Times stated that the tragedy happened in a little over ten minutes. Korean Air affirmed that oxygen masks were used to protect passengers during the disaster.
Reason for the Event
Although the Taipei Times reported that the aircraft’s pressurization system malfunctioned, Korean Air has not formally verified this information. Modern aircraft usually have an automatic pressurization system that keeps the cabin pressure constant from the moment of departure.

Thankfully, there were no serious injuries recorded, although 17 passengers were treated by medical professionals for hyperventilation and ear ache after the plane returned safely to Korea. All guests received lodging, meals, and overnight transportation from Korean Air. A representative for Korean Air stressed in an official statement the airline’s dedication to passenger safety and its collaboration with pertinent authorities in conducting a comprehensive investigation into the occurrence.
Boeing’s Difficult Past
This incident heightens the continuous scrutiny Boeing is under, especially with regard to the 737 MAX 8 type. Recently, on a trip from Phoenix to Oakland, another Southwest Airlines 737 MAX 8 experienced a Dutch roll; however, no casualties were recorded in that instance. Furthermore, the Federal Aviation Administration and Congress are now doing more supervision and investigations as a result of the well-publicized Alaska Airlines incident earlier this year.
