According to a new Emerson College survey, 49% of respondents nationwide prefer Vice President Kamala Harris, while 48% back former President Donald Trump, giving Harris a slim advantage. As Election Day draws near, this narrow margin is inside the survey’s three-point margin of error, indicating a fiercely competitive contest.

Additionally, the survey showed that when those who were unsure of their preference were asked, Harris’s support rose to 50% while Trump’s received 49%. In terms of favorability ratings, Harris also scored better than Trump; 53% of respondents thought favorably of her, compared to 49% who thought the same of him.

There is a clear gender disparity in the polls: Harris leads Trump 55% to 41% among female voters, while Trump leads male voters 56% to 42%. Although recent deciders prefer Harris heavily, 80% of voters reported making their choice more than a month ago, as early voting gets underway in numerous states.

The contest appears to be among the closest in recent memory, with extremely narrow margins in crucial battleground states like Pennsylvania and Michigan. The Emerson poll, which had a three percentage point margin of error, was performed among 1,000 potential voters between October 14 and 16.
