HMP Dartmoor Closes 180 Prison Cells Due to Radioactive Gas

Read Time:1 Minute, 37 Second

With the discovery of radioactive gas forcing the shutdown of a large number of its facilities, HMP Dartmoor is currently facing a dilemma. A high level of radon, an odorless and colorless gas, was found at the Devon men’s prison, which prompted the closure of 184 cells in November and February. As a precaution, 194 inmates were moved out of the facility in response to this concerning discovery.

When breathed, radon, a byproduct of uranium’s natural disintegration in rocks and soils, can have detrimental long-term effects, including lung cancer. Although radon is present globally, regions with high granite concentrations, like Dartmoor, are frequently linked to greater radon concentrations.

The Prison Service’s larger endeavor to remedy the radon contamination at HMP Dartmoor includes the closure and relocation operations. To protect the security of both employees and prisoners, interim steps are being taken while long-term solutions are being looked for.

Labour has criticized the government’s response to the radon poisoning discovery, with Shadow Prisons Minister Ruth Cadbury denouncing the government’s actions. Concerns about the administration of the jail estate have been brought up in relation to the slow response to the radon detection.

Citing temporary mitigations in place since 2022, Justice Minister Edward Argar has reassured the public of continuous efforts to remedy the situation. The recent discovery of higher radon levels has prompted the need for further expert guidance, highlighting the critical nature of the situation.

The event at HMP Dartmoor occurs in the context of ongoing problems brought to light by a study by an independent monitoring board. The report identified concerns about understaffing and overcrowding, casting doubt on the prison’s appropriateness for its intended use.

Concerns over the general state and administration of the prison system remain, despite efforts by authorities to address the radon pollution and its effects. This highlights the necessity of thorough reform to guarantee the safety and well-being of everyone residing within the prison’s walls.
