A key piece of history related to the Titanic’s tragic sinking is about to be auctioned off. A 14-carat gold Waltham pocket watch engraved with the initials “JJA” belonging to business magnate John Jacob Astor, who died in the Titanic disaster, is estimated to sell for up to £150,000 at auction.

The watch, recovered from Astor’s remains seven days after the Titanic sank in 1912, is extremely valuable historically. Astor, one of the wealthiest passengers on the ill-fated ship, was last seen speaking peacefully in a lifeboat after insuring his pregnant wife’s safety.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge emphasizes Astor’s prominence and riches, estimating that the magnate’s net worth at the time was roughly equivalent to several billion dollars today.

The watch, passed down through Astor’s family, was worn by his son, adding to its unique place in Titanic history.

The auction, held by Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire, is slated for Saturday, and collectors and enthusiasts alike look forward to the opportunity to acquire a tangible piece of one of history’s most iconic maritime catastrophes.
