Former VP Harris Delivers Pointed Message at NAACP Ceremony During her acceptance speech at the 56th NAACP Image Awards, former Vice President Kamala Harris offered subtle criticism of both former President Donald Trump and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk while discussing democracy’s current challenges.
Harris, receiving the Chairman’s Award, emphasized the importance of collective civic engagement. She noted that America’s future would be determined not by those in high office or with great wealth, but by its citizens working together.
Her speech coincided with heightened tensions during Black History Month, particularly regarding the previous administration’s rollback of DEI initiatives. Addressing current challenges, she acknowledged public concerns about environmental threats and democratic stability.
In the weeks following her departure from office, Harris has maintained a public presence, particularly in California where she’s participated in wildfire relief efforts. These activities have led to discussions about her possible interest in the state’s governorship when Newsom’s term concludes in 2026. Her message gained additional visibility through social media shares by her husband Doug Emhoff.
Concluding her remarks, Harris urged for active civic participation through organizing, education, and advocacy, emphasizing optimism over pessimism. The Chairman’s Award, which celebrates contributions to social progress, places Harris alongside notable previous recipients such as John Lewis, Barack Obama, and Amanda Gorman.
