Google recently removed the Gemini AI system, which creates photos, off the internet due to a backlash over the system’s creation of historically accurate images that reflect ethnic diversity. The technology was criticized for generating pictures that were either unsuitable or erroneous in terms of history.
Users observed that the produced photographs tended to depict women and people of color when they were asked to select images of particular historical characters or events, such as US founding fathers or Nazi troops. This sparked questions about the produced content’s propriety and authenticity.
In response to the criticism, Google said that the Gemini AI picture generating capability will be temporarily suspended until further development could be done. In a statement, the IT behemoth admitted that recent problems needed to be fixed and promised to soon re-release an improved version of the system.

Earlier scandals—like the one in which Google Photos labeled African Americans as “gorillas” in 2015—showcase the continuous difficulty in eliminating prejudice from AI systems.
