Ukraine has received its first batch of Mirage 2000 fighter jets from France, marking a significant boost to its air defense capabilities. French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed the delivery on Thursday, stating that the jets, piloted by Ukrainian military personnel trained in France, will play a crucial role in defending Ukrainian skies.
The delivery fulfills a promise made by French President Emmanuel Macron in 2024 to support Ukraine’s military efforts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude, praising Macron’s leadership and commitment. “The air force fleet is continuing to grow,” Zelensky said, highlighting the strategic importance of the jets.
The Mirage 2000 fighters, designed for air defense, are also capable of deploying Franco-British “Scalp” cruise missiles, known as “Storm Shadow,” enhancing Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities. While the exact number of jets remains undisclosed, this move underscores France’s ongoing support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflicts.
This delivery not only strengthens Ukraine’s defense but also signals a deepening alliance between Ukraine and Western nations in the face of aggression. The Mirage jets are expected to significantly bolster Ukraine’s ability to protect its airspace and counter threats effectively.
