Federal prosecutors have leveled new accusations against Donald Trump, alleging he engaged in criminal behavior to retain power after losing the 2020 presidential election. These claims were disclosed in a recently unsealed court document, adding to the legal challenges confronting the former president.

The filing, submitted by Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office, contends that Trump disregarded advice from key advisors, including then-Vice President Mike Pence, and acted unlawfully in attempts to overturn the election outcome. Prosecutors argue that Trump’s actions were personal rather than official, thus not protected by presidential immunity.

“The defendant turned to criminal means to maintain his grip on power after losing the 2020 election,” the document asserts, emphasizing Trump’s alleged disregard for democratic processes.

The filing highlights tensions between Trump and Pence during this period. It claims Pence urged Trump to accept the results and consider a 2024 campaign, advice Trump allegedly ignored. Instead, Trump is accused of pressuring Pence to block the electoral vote certification on January 6, 2021, which Pence refused to do.

Prosecutors also allege that Trump spread misinformation, which they claim contributed to the Capitol riots.

Trump, who has pleaded not guilty to four criminal charges related to January 6 events, maintains that these cases are politically motivated attempts to hinder his political aspirations. He is currently preparing for a 2024 presidential run.

This filing may be one of the final steps before Trump faces Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November 5 election. The ongoing legal proceedings are expected to significantly impact the political landscape as they unfold.
