The FIA has introduced key updates to Formula 1 regulations for 2025, targeting driver cooling systems and changes to the Drag Reduction System (DRS). These revisions were approved during the World Motor Sport Council meeting in Rwanda.
One major change is the implementation of “heat hazard” protocols. If temperatures rise above 30.5°C, as determined by FIA weather systems or the race director, teams will be required to provide drivers with enhanced cooling systems. To accommodate this, the minimum car weight will increase by 5kg throughout the race weekend.
For 2026, DRS rules have been refined to close loopholes used by teams in previous seasons. The gap in the rear wing’s DRS slot has been reduced from 10-15mm to 9.4-13mm in closed mode. Additionally, DRS usage will be restricted to two fixed positions, ensuring aerodynamic adjustments are strictly regulated.
These rule updates prioritize driver safety and competitive fairness, reflecting the FIA’s ongoing commitment to improving Formula 1 standards.
