The Path to the 458 GTE
Before making waves in the BTCC in 2017, Rory Butcher’s talent was already making headlines in the GT racing world. Among his standout moments was the 2016 European Le Mans Series (ELMS) season with JMW Motorsport, where he raced alongside Andrea Bertolini and Rob Smith in the Ferrari 458 GTE.
Describing it as “my favorite ever season of car racing,” Butcher credits the 458 GTE for its unforgettable performance and emotional connection.
What Made the 458 GTE Special
The Ferrari 458 GTE, powered by a 4.5-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, captured Butcher’s heart with its thrilling sound and exceptional performance.
“What really is amazing about the Ferraris of that era was just the engine note,” he recalls. “It was a car that truly excited you.”
Butcher lauded its sharp front-end handling, balanced mid-engine design, and effective aerodynamics. Interestingly, he saw the absence of Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) — rare in modern GT racing — as an advantage that added to the car’s raw driving experience.
“It delivered incredible feedback and was exhilarating to drive without ABS,” Butcher notes.
Rising in the ELMS
Butcher’s journey with the 458 GTE began in 2015 after impressing in a shootout at Snetterton. Joining JMW Motorsport as an FIA silver-graded driver, he partnered with Smith and Jonny Cocker for the final two ELMS races that year. A podium finish at Paul Ricard showcased his potential, though gearbox issues at Estoril hindered further progress.
In 2016, Butcher returned for a full season with JMW Motorsport. Alongside Bertolini and Smith, he formed a formidable team. Despite an early setback — a disqualification at Silverstone due to a non-compliant splitter — the trio delivered dominant performances at the Red Bull Ring, Paul Ricard, and Spa.
Heartache in Estoril
As the championship finale approached at Estoril, JMW Motorsport was in a commanding position. With a 20-point lead, finishing seventh or better would secure the title. Yet, fate had other plans.
Butcher initially stormed into the lead, but the team was struck by gearbox troubles. As Smith re-entered the track, an LMP3 Ligier collided with their Ferrari, causing terminal damage. With the Beechdean Aston Martin team clinching victory, JMW Motorsport’s championship hopes were dashed.
“You couldn’t make up a story like that,” Butcher reflects. “It was a bizarre and unfortunate end to the season.”
Lessons from a Master
Despite the bitter conclusion, Butcher views the 2016 season as transformative. His teammate Andrea Bertolini, a seasoned driver, was instrumental in shaping Butcher’s growth.
“He was an incredible teammate and leader,” Butcher shares. “I learned so much from him in just one season.”
Bertolini’s guidance, coupled with the challenges of the ELMS campaign, played a pivotal role in elevating Butcher’s skills and professionalism.
The Ferrari 458 GTE’s Legacy
The Ferrari 458 GTE’s illustrious career began in 2011 and concluded in 2017, marked by numerous triumphs. It debuted with a win in the Le Mans Series at Paul Ricard and remained competitive until JMW Motorsport transitioned to the Ferrari 488.
In its final ELMS race at Monza in 2017, the 458 GTE secured a fitting farewell victory, underscoring its enduring competitiveness and legendary status.
A Career-Defining Experience
In 2017, Butcher’s promotion to FIA gold status limited his GT racing opportunities, prompting his return to the TOCA package. However, his time with the Ferrari 458 GTE left a lasting impression.
For Butcher, the 458 wasn’t just another race car — it was an experience that encapsulated passion, growth, and unforgettable moments. Its distinct engine note, impeccable balance, and raw driving experience continue to hold a special place in his heart.
“Every moment in that car was pure joy,” he fondly recalls.
