An investigation is underway into the possibility of an assassination attempt that resulted in one person’s death and two injuries at a former president Donald Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday. CNN spoke with eyewitnesses who described the scene as hectic and colourful.
Anarchy Breaks Out at Trump Rally
The demonstration started out like any other, but as soon as guns were fired, chaos broke out. Speaking before Trump, Rico Elmore detailed the immediate aftermath. “All we know is shots were fired, and then I jumped over the barrier and put my hand on the guy’s head that was profusely bleeding,” Elmore recalled. The victim’s blood on his white shirt served as a startling reminder of the violence that had taken place.

Elmore stressed that he did not know the person he had assisted, seeming shaken but unharmed. “Just a stranger,” he stated, summarising the incident’s strangeness and terror. Elmore did not witness what occurred to Trump despite the turmoil, but he did observe that, as per Trump’s allegation on Truth Social, the previous president had been shot in the ear. Subsequently, the Secret Service verified that two rally attendees had suffered serious injuries, and one had died. According to spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, the gunman, who opened fire from outside the gathering, was “neutralised” by the Secret Service.
Position of the Shooter Disclosed
The gunman set up shop on a rooftop not far from the gathering site, law enforcement officials told CNN. Trump was standing to his right when he spoke, facing this highly police-guarded structure following the event. Ensuring the safety of those in attendance became more challenging due to the shooter’s strategic location.
Firsthand Testimonies
Seated in the front row and a Republican candidate for the Senate, Dave McCormick called the event “immediate chaos.” He described how a barrage of gunfire interrupted Trump’s announcement of him and invitation to the stage. “Suddenly, everything was simply mayhem. The audience instantly fell to the ground as the Secret Service leaped on top of the president and covered him,” McCormick recalled.
McCormick observed that it was challenging to discern the source of the shots in real time. “It seemed like the shots were coming from my front – so the president’s left – which makes sense why the person behind me was hit,” stated the president. In spite of the uncertainty, McCormick stated that everyone who attended the event had been screened with metal detectors before being let in.
Reactions of Republican Representatives
Representative Dan Meuser, a Republican who was seated in the front row, gave CNN his viewpoint. He said the incident happened about 20 feet away from McCormick and Pennsylvania Representative Mike Kelly, who were seated next to each other. “It started out like a regular rally…next thing you know, there was rapid fire,” Meuser stated. He underlined the ensuing fear and anxiety and said that the audience was calmed by Trump’s thumbs-up.
Meuser also demanded that going ahead, there be less animosity and more civility. “We truly need to put an end to the animosity. We need to calm down, I think everyone agrees,” he said.
Absolute Madness
Another witness was Grove City, Pennsylvania-based surgeon Joseph Meyn. He described the instant he realised how serious the situation was. “Very shocking…a lot of people just thought it was fireworks going off, I knew immediately it was gunfire,” Meyn stated. He explained that when the gunfire started, he was recording Trump’s speech.
Meyn assisted in removing a man who was mortally injured from the stands. He related, “I saw a man in the stands was hit directly in the head and died instantly,” adding that a woman had minor injuries to her hand and forearm. Meyn, who helped move the man’s body, was waiting to provide the FBI with a witness statement. “This is the first Trump rally I’ve been to…you don’t anticipate this stuff to go on, it’s pure insanity,” he said.
The terrible Butler rally incidents have highlighted the need for increased security and a demand to lessen political animosity. The goal of the ongoing investigations is to figure out what motivated the attack and make sure that similar things don’t happen again. The violent end to the demonstration, which was intended to inspire supporters, will now be remembered.
