EU Vows Firm Response if Trump Imposes Tariffs

Read Time:1 Minute, 5 Second

The European Union has issued a strong warning to US President Donald Trump, cautioning against the economic fallout of potential tariffs on EU goods. Following Trump’s recent tariff decisions targeting Canada, Mexico, and China, the EU expressed deep concern over the impact of such measures on global trade.

An EU spokesperson in Brussels stated, “Open markets and respect for international trade rules are essential for strong and sustainable economic growth.” The spokesperson emphasized that tariffs disrupt economies, fuel inflation, and harm all parties involved.

The EU made it clear that it would “respond firmly” if the US unfairly imposes tariffs on European goods. Highlighting the significance of the EU-US trade relationship, the spokesperson noted, “Our trade and investment relationship with the US is the biggest in the world. There is a lot at stake.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously underscored the deep economic ties between the two regions, noting that European companies support 3.5 million jobs in the US, with an additional 1 million American jobs reliant on trade with Europe.

The EU urged both sides to focus on strengthening their economic partnership rather than escalating trade tensions. As of now, no new US tariffs on EU products have been announced, but the EU remains prepared to defend its interests.
