Glasgow, June 24, 2024 – Firefighters are still fighting a large fire at an industrial park close to Paisley, Renfrewshire. Residents reported hearing huge explosions, and at 21:00 on Sunday, the Enva electronic waste dump caught fire.
Five of the ten fire engines that were dispatched to the Linwood Industrial Estate in Elderslie on Monday morning remained on the scene. There was a big cloud of smoke that could be seen moving toward Glasgow from the north. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
While the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has warned the public to stay away from the area, they have also reassured the locals that it is safe to go outside or to leave their windows and doors open.
Considering that Scotland was playing Hungary in the Euros, an eyewitness initially characterized the explosions as fireworks. He wrote, “Then we noticed this enormous plume of smoke drifting over from Johnstone, Elderslie towards Paisley when we peered out the window.” It did sound like fireworks or gunfire.”
A spokesperson verified that the smoke hasn’t interfered with flights, even though Glasgow Airport is close by.
The garbage facility’s operator, Enva, verified the event was under control and that no injuries had been reported. They apologized for any difficulty caused and suggested that people heed the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s advice. The general trash recycling facility operated by Enva will be closed until emergency services reclaim the site.
Because of the ongoing fire response, Burnbrae Road in Linwood is still closed at the Linclive Interchange.
