Tech tycoon Elon Musk has come under fire from former UK minister Mel Stride for his incendiary comments on the recent riots in Britain. Musk’s predictions of an imminent “civil war” in the UK have been denounced by Stride, the shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, who called them “absurd and deeply, deeply unhelpful.” This occurs at the same time as British politicians are putting more and more pressure on Musk over remarks he made on social media site X, which was formerly known as Twitter.
Mel Stride’s Biting Rebuke of Musk’s Statements
Stride voiced his dislike of Musk’s recent remarks—among them the concerning assertion that “civil war is inevitable” in the UK—in an interview with Times Radio. Additionally, Musk created the hashtag #TwoTierKeir, implying that Sir Keir Starmer, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, was in charge of a “two-tier policing” system. But Musk’s reputation suffered when he disseminated inaccurate information on X on the British government’s establishment of camps for rioters to be held captive in the Falkland Islands.
Stride expressed his disapproval of Musk’s actions without holding back, saying, “I have concerns about X generally, in terms of the fairly permissive approach to those that are able to further all sorts of views, including conspiracy theories.” In view of the recent instability in UK cities, he went on, calling for a “fresh look” at how social media sites are governed. Stride claims that the unfettered dissemination of false information and conspiracy theories online is a major factor to violence in the real world, as seen by the most recent riots.
Social Media Conspiracy Theories: Cautionary Tales
Stride’s remarks brought to light the rising anxiety among UK authorities over social media’s role in stoking civil unrest. Stride continued, highlighting the need for responsibility and more regulation of platforms like X. “In terms of consequences for those platform providers that allow some of these ideas to percolate, because they do have real-world consequences, as we saw on our streets,” Stride said.
Stride responded pragmatistically when asked if he would personally boycott X, saying, “Me, personally no, certainly not at the moment.” He did concede, though, that a number of his fellow lawmakers had already moved to disassociate themselves from the program because of such worries.
Growing Opposition to Musk in Politics
Not all of the Tory contenders for leadership have expressed as much disagreement as Stride has with Musk’s divisive remarks. A day prior, Tom Tugendhat, a Conservative MP, blasted Musk for inciting discord in the UK during a tumultuous time, calling his remarks “delusional and simply false.” Tugendhat’s critique is indicative of a larger dissatisfaction among some MPs in the UK about Musk’s stance on free speech and the abundance of detrimental information on his platform.
The Conservative Party continues to back Musk in spite of these objections. Musk’s dedication to free expression was supported by former prime minister Liz Truss, who was defeated in the most recent general election. Truss commended the tech mogul in a post on X, stating, “Free expression is essential to a truly free society. Well done, @elonmusk and @X, for confronting these bullies.” Truss’s comments coincided with Musk’s continuing disputes with the European Union about content control on his platform.
Musk and the European Union’s Conflict
Musk is engaged in other conflicts than his latest feud with the UK government. In addition, the billionaire and the European Union are at odds over the amplification of offensive information on X. Musk received a formal warning earlier this week from EU Digital Commissioner Thierry Breton, reminding him of his legal responsibilities to limit the dissemination of harmful content on social media.
Musk responded with a brazen statement that further strained his ties to European authorities. His detractors have taken note of his aggressive posture, claiming that Musk’s lax handling of content filtering is fueling the spread of false information and extremism online.
Musk has nevertheless gained backers who share his views on free speech, such as Truss. Although he had called Truss a “lettuce” on his platform a few days prior, Musk publicly acknowledged Truss for her support. The allusion to “lettuce” originates from a widely shared joke that contrasts the brief tenure of Prime Minister Truss with the life expectancy of a lettuce.
