Elon Musk has called for the US government to “delete entire agencies” as part of a radical approach to reduce federal spending and streamline governance. Speaking at the World Governments Summit in Dubai via video link, the tech billionaire criticized the current system of “rule by bureaucracy” and advocated for a complete overhaul of federal agencies to address inefficiencies and overregulation.
Musk, known for his disruptive vision in both technology and governance, argued that merely reforming existing agencies is insufficient. “If we don’t remove the roots of the problem, it’s easy for it to regrow,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a more drastic reset. He also highlighted the accumulation of regulations over time, suggesting that such overregulation is a byproduct of prolonged prosperity.
The SpaceX and Tesla CEO’s comments come amid his growing influence in shaping government efficiency. Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), though not an official government entity, has reportedly been involved in editing federal spending and payment systems. However, the lack of transparency surrounding DOGE’s operations has raised concerns about oversight and accountability.
Musk also took aim at specific agencies, including the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Endowment for Democracy, questioning their effectiveness. “How much democracy have they really achieved recently?” he asked, pointing to recent spending freezes and cuts as evidence of their inefficacy.
His remarks signaled a shift toward a more isolationist US foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East. Musk stated that under the current administration, the US would be “less interested in interfering with the affairs of other countries,” aligning with his broader critique of global interventionism.
In addition to governance, Musk addressed the Trump administration’s stance on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. He warned that integrating DEI principles into artificial intelligence could lead to extreme outcomes, such as eliminating men from positions of power. Musk also teased the upcoming launch of X’s new AI chatbot, Grok 3, describing it as both “exciting” and “kind of scary.”
Musk’s critique extended to OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, which he likened to an environmental non-profit turning into a lumber company. Despite his offer to buy the company, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has declined, further fueling Musk’s public criticism.
As Musk continues to push for sweeping changes in both technology and governance, his call to “delete entire agencies” underscores his belief in the need for bold, transformative action to address systemic inefficiencies. Whether his vision will gain traction remains to be seen, but his influence on public discourse is undeniable.
