Athens, Alabama – On the night of December 29, 2024, an EF-1 tornado touched down in downtown Athens, Limestone County. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville confirmed that the tornado, with winds ranging from 86-110 mph, caused extensive damage to the area.

The tornado hit just before midnight, impacting homes, businesses, and local infrastructure. Power outages were widespread, and crews are working to restore electricity.

Emergency response teams have been dispatched to assist residents, and although there have been reports of minor injuries, no fatalities have been confirmed.

Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks assured the public that recovery efforts are underway. “Our priority is the safety of our community, and we are working closely to support affected residents,” he said.
