Unidentified drones were spotted over three airbases in the United Kingdom between November 20 and 22, according to the United States Air Force (USAF). The drones, categorized as “small unmanned aerial systems” (UAS), were seen around Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell in eastern England.
The USAF stated that the drones were closely monitored, and no damage to base residents or infrastructure was reported. “We do not disclose specific force protection protocols, but we retain the right to secure our installations,” a USAF spokesperson noted.
The motives behind the drone activity remain uncertain. The USAF is working closely with UK authorities to investigate the incidents and ensure the safety of military personnel and facilities.
RAF Lakenheath, home to the 48th Fighter Wing, is a crucial element of the USAF’s combat operations in Europe. RAF Mildenhall houses the 100th Air Refueling Wing, while RAF Feltwell provides key services like housing and schools.
These drone sightings occurred in the same week Ukraine launched U.S.- and UK-supplied intermediate-range missiles at Russian targets, prompting a retaliatory missile strike from Russia. President Vladimir Putin warned that countries supporting Ukraine could face attacks.
While the drones have not been identified as a direct threat, their presence raises concerns about unmanned aerial systems in sensitive airspace. Authorities continue to investigate the origin and intent of the drones as tensions between nations escalate.
