On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organisation (WHO) proclaimed mpox, often referred to as monkeypox, a worldwide health emergency. This is the second time in three years that the virus has caused such a severe warning. The announcement is a reaction to a concerning epidemic that has spread to 13 African countries, including the Central African Republic, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This comeback has caused alarm around the world and sparked concerns about the virus’s possible spread to other countries, including the US.
Knowing the Virus Caused by Monkeypox
The virus that causes smallpox is closely linked to the virus that causes mpox. Clade I and Clade II are the two primary clades of the virus. Clade I is known to cause more severe disease and greater fatality rates; it is primarily prevalent in Central Africa. Clade II, on the other hand, is normally less severe and is mostly linked to West Africa; yet, it was responsible for the worldwide epidemic in 2022.
There are a several methods to spread the virus, but direct contact with wild animals that are sick, mpox patients, or contaminated objects like clothes or bedding are the most prevalent ones. Human-to-human transmission usually happens when two people come into close physical contact, communicate, or breathe together for an extended period of time. Because it can aid in the virus’s spread in highly populated places, this route of transmission is very worrying.
Is there monkeypox in the United States?
The more severe strain of the virus, known as clade I mpox, which is presently devastating regions of Africa, has not yet been reported in any cases in the United States. Nonetheless, weekly reports of clade II mpox cases continue to be received from all around the nation. These instances are mostly linked to the global pandemic that occurred in 2022 and its aftereffects.
The public has been persuaded by federal health authorities that there is still little chance of a large mpox epidemic in the United States. However, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released a travel advisory and health warning, advising medical professionals and public health organisations to exercise caution. The CDC advises doctors assessing individuals with symptoms suggestive of mpox to ask about recent travel to impacted areas.
Tennessee: Current Status of Mpx
Although there haven’t been any documented instances of clade I mpox in Tennessee, public health officials are keeping a careful eye on things. To make sure that any possible instances are promptly detected and handled, the state health department collaborates with federal agencies. Tennessee people should be aware and take the appropriate measures, especially if travelling to locations where the virus is actively spreading, even though the immediate hazard to them is minimal.
Monkeypox Symptoms
Typically, mpox symptoms start with a rash that might emerge on the hands, feet, chest, face, mouth, or genitalia, among other regions of the body. Usually, 21 days after viral exposure, this rash appears. The rash may first seem similar to other skin disorders, but it gradually develops into pustules and scabs.
Those with mpox may also have a variety of flu-like symptoms in addition to the rash, such as:
- High temperature
- Colds
Inflamed lymph nodes
- Tiredness
- Backaches and muscle pains
- Headaches
- Symptoms of the respiratory system, such as coughing, nasal congestion, or sore throat
The intensity of these symptoms varies; some people may only have minor pain, while others may experience more significant problems.
Medication and Testing
It is advised that those who get a rash associated with the virus get tested for mpox. A medical professional will swab the rash’s lesions as part of the diagnostic procedure, then submit the samples to a lab for examination. Usually, results are ready in a few days.
There isn’t a particular therapy for mpox at the moment. There is, nonetheless, a vaccination that can aid in infection prevention. Upon completion of both doses, individuals are deemed immune to the virus, after vaccination. Because the two viruses are similar, researchers are also looking at the possibility of using TPOXX, a smallpox therapy, as a therapeutic option for mpox.

Although there have been worries raised by the latest worldwide mpox outbreak, things are still under control in Tennessee and the United States. Public health authorities are keeping a careful eye on the virus, and with vaccinations now available and research into possible therapies continuing, there is cautious optimism that the outbreak’s effects can be lessened.
