A Florida physician was placed on probation when it was discovered by state health inspectors that he started doing colonoscopies without wearing his hearing aids, which resulted in a serious error. The patient was not completely sedated throughout the treatment, which is why hearing-impaired Dr. Ishwari Prasad allegedly did not hear the patient shouting, according to a complaint filed by the Florida Department of Health.
The event happened at a Tampa surgical facility on June 5, 2023. According to the administrative complaint, Dr. Prasad did not promptly cease the colonoscopy when the patient started to shout, as required by the minimal level of care.
The lawsuit also refers to another event that happened that day in which Dr. Prasad is accused of giving a surgical technician—who is not a qualified physician—part of the colonoscopy. Notably, Dr. Prasad’s ability to communicate with his surgical team was compromised during both procedures since he was not using his assisted hearing equipment.
Dr. Prasad was fined $7,500 and prohibited from conducting gastrointestinal operations in response to these grave charges. The compensation highlights how serious the problem is, even if he did not acknowledge or deny the claims.
Licensed to practise medicine in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida since 1990, Dr Prasad started his career in medicine in the early 1980s. He hasn’t replied to demands for comment as of yet.
The significance of good communication in medical operations is called into question by this instance, particularly for healthcare personnel who may have hearing difficulties.
