Kamala Harris remains the leading choice for the Democratic nomination in the 2028 presidential race, according to a new Puck News/Echelon Insights poll. Despite her defeat to President-elect Donald Trump in 2024, Harris continues to enjoy strong name recognition and support within the Democratic Party, securing 41% of the vote in the poll.
However, a majority of Democrats—59%—are considering other options for 2028. Although no clear front-runner has emerged, California Governor Gavin Newsom comes in second with 8% of the vote. Newsom has been vocal in his opposition to Trump, recently visiting the White House to meet President Joe Biden and vowing that California will stand firm against the incoming administration’s agenda.
Other key Democratic figures in the poll include Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro at 7%, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at 6%, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with 4%. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer trails with 3%. Additionally, Governors JB Pritzker, Andy Beshear, Jared Polis, and Wes Moore are mentioned as potential contenders, alongside Senators John Fetterman, Cory Booker, and Raphael Warnock.
Republicans Gear Up for 2028
On the Republican side, Donald Trump’s favorability stands at 49%, slightly ahead of Harris (47%) and President Biden (42%). However, Trump is unable to run for re-election in 2028 due to term limits, paving the way for Vice President-elect JD Vance to emerge as the likely GOP nominee.
Other Republicans in the race include Senators Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, and Tim Scott, as well as Governors Ron DeSantis, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Glenn Youngkin, and Kristi Noem. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy are also seen as potential candidates.
A Divided Democratic Field
Harris’s continued support highlights her influence within the party, but the lack of a clear successor points to a divided Democratic base. While Newsom and Shapiro are gaining attention, neither has yet built broad enough support to challenge Harris’s position at the top.
Meanwhile, Republicans appear more unified around JD Vance and other rising figures, setting the stage for a competitive 2028 race. As Trump prepares for his second term, both parties are already looking ahead to the next presidential election cycle.
