DC Area’s Fourth of July 2024 Open and Closed Schedule

Residents of D.C., Maryland, and Virginia should be aware of the many closures and schedule modifications as Independence Day draws near. This is an all-inclusive list of everything will be open and closed on July 4, 2024.

Transportation by Public

Metrorail: Available from 7 a.m. till midnight.

  • Metrobus: Has a Sunday schedule of operation.
  • MetroAccess: Reservations can be made by phoning 301-562-5360; pre-scheduled subscription trips have been discontinued.
  • Free rides – Free parking (WMATA) is available all day, as well as free Metrorail, Metrobus, and MetroAccess after 5 p.m.
  • MARC Train: only available on the Penn Line on Saturdays.
  • VRE: Not available.

In Washington, D.C.

Closed: DMV locations, public libraries, and government offices.

  • Trash/Recycling: Collections move to July 5 from July 4; they slide one day.
  • Parks and Recreation: Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. are outdoor pools.
  • Parking: There are no meter costs.

Maryland

  • Statewide: Closed DMV locations, public libraries, and government offices.
  • Beverage Services with Alcohol: Available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Montgomery County
  • MC311: Not in use.
  • Recycling/Trash: Regular pickup Slides one day; collection not available Thursday. Mon–Wed.
  • Bus rides: Saturday timetable.
  • Parking: On-street, in garages, and in county-owned lots; free.
    Open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Pools.
The County of Prince George
  • Recycling/Trash: Move it forward one day to Friday, July 5.
  • Parks/Recreation: Community and sports centers closed; museums, swimming areas, and senior centers open.
County of Anne Arundel
  • Trash: Collections take place on Fridays; on Saturdays, on Fridays.
  • Pools: Aquatic Center and Olympic Swim Center are closed.

Charles County
  • Trash/Recycling: Recycling and landfills are closed; curbside pickup is not available.
  • Pools : Open from midday to five p.m.
  • VanGO: Not available.
Howard County
  • Trash/Recycling: Not picked up; please wait until the next day.
Frederick County

Trash: Friday is the collection day for Thursday.

  • Transit: No services; closed.

Virginia

  • Statewide: Closed DMV locations, public libraries, and government offices.
Alexandria
  • Recycling/Trash: One day late.
    Pools*: Available from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
    *DASH Bus*: Timetable for Sundays.
  • Parking: Residential permit districts are not time-limited; there are no meter fees.
Arlington County
  • Recycling/Trash: Carry on as normal.
    County offices/services: Schedules have been adjusted.
County of Loudoun
  • Landfill: Not operating.
  • Transit: No amenities offered.
County of Fairfax
  • Recycling/Trash: Regular operations.
  • Recycling & Disposal Facilities: Not Open.
  • Fairfax Connector: Timetable for Saturdays.
  • Activity Hubs: Available from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. (George Washington Recreation Center opens at 6:30 a.m.).
Prince William County
  • Landfill: Not operating.
  • Pools: Open from midday to six p.m.
  • OmniRide: Not available.
