Cristiano Ronaldo has lashed out at English football legends Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer for their harsh criticism during Euro 2024. The Portuguese forward, known for his fiery responses, didn’t hold back, labeling the two pundits as “rats” for mocking his emotional reaction after missing a penalty.
Ronaldo’s tears followed his missed penalty during Portugal’s Round of 16 clash against Slovenia. Despite scoring in the ensuing shootout to help his team advance to the quarter-finals, where they eventually lost to France, the Al-Nassr star was ridiculed on social media, with Lineker and Shearer adding their voices to the chorus of mockery.
Speaking in an interview with Rio Ferdinand, Ronaldo made his feelings clear. “They don’t know anything,” he stated bluntly. “It’s easy to criticize, but no one talks about the hard work behind the scenes. If you speak positively, it doesn’t sell.”
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also addressed his emotional display on the pitch, acknowledging the weight of the moment. “Even the strongest have bad days,” Ronaldo said. “I was at rock bottom, but I’ve learned to embrace those moments. That’s what football is—moments of joy, frustration, and inexplicable emotions.”
In response to Shearer and Lineker’s criticisms, Ronaldo dismissed their importance in his career. “Am I going to quit because two rats said something? The world loves me, and that’s my motivation. No one is taking my shine.”
Ronaldo has started the 2024/25 season on a high, looking to defend his Saudi Pro League Golden Boot, while also continuing to silence critics both on and off the pitch. Despite nearing 40, the Portuguese icon remains determined to stay at the top of the game for as long as possible, with his sights still set on future championships.
