June 3, 2024, Liverpool In order to protect the safety of the tens of thousands of people anticipated to attend the formal naming ceremony of Cunard’s newest cruise liner, Queen Anne, Merseyrail has announced that James Street station would be closed today. A day full of festivities, music, and fireworks is promised at the event, which is taking place at Liverpool’s Pier Head.
Around 7 a.m., the Queen Anne is scheduled to dock at the Cruise Terminal. TV host Emma Willis and singer Matt Willis of Busted will emcee the naming ceremony, which begins at 4 p.m. Andrea Bocelli and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the event, and at 8 p.m., Craig Charles will DJ. At ten o’clock in the evening, the cruise ship will sail away, setting off a spectacular fireworks display.
James Street station will close at 6:30 p.m. in order to control the massive crowds and guarantee safety. Passengers heading to Wirral are advised by Merseyrail to utilize Moorfields station instead. But please be aware that the escalators at Moorfields that lead to the Wirral platform are now broken. If you want escalator access, take the Northern line from Moorfields to Liverpool Central. From there, escalators operate to the Wirral platform.
Merseyrail’s Deputy Managing Director and Chief Commercial Officer, Suzanne Grant, said: “There will be a great celebration on the waterfront when this amazing new ship from Cunard is named. We estimate that thousands of people will want to be a part of this momentous occasion. In order to guarantee that we prioritize the comfort and safety of our customers, we have implemented a unique plan.”
Grant also made it clear that trains will not stop at James Street in Liverpool after 6:30 p.m. from Wirral. Riders should disembark at Liverpool Central or Moorfields. Merseyrail is dedicated to making sure that everyone who attends this unique event has a seamless and pleasurable experience.
