Biden Reflects on Foreign Policy Achievements
US President Joe Biden hailed his presidency as a success in foreign policy, citing the failure of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s goals in Ukraine as a standout accomplishment. During a press conference at the US State Department, Biden outlined how his administration bolstered alliances, countered adversaries, and restored America’s global leadership.
A New Era of Global Competition
Biden described the world as being at a critical juncture, transitioning from the “post-Cold War period” to an age of “fierce competition.” He asserted, “The United States is winning the worldwide competition,” highlighting how America has tackled crises and emerged stronger.
“Compared to four years ago, America is stronger, our alliances are more robust, and our competitors are weaker,” he said, pointing to advancements in technology, the global economy, and the promotion of democratic values as evidence of his administration’s progress.
Russia’s Failures in Ukraine
Biden focused much of his remarks on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, framing it as a defining test of his leadership.
“When Putin invaded Ukraine, he believed Kyiv would fall within days,” Biden stated. “The reality is, I’ve stood in Kyiv, but he never has.”
He emphasized that Putin has been unable to achieve his strategic objectives. “Nearly three years into the conflict, Putin has failed to subjugate Ukraine, failed to fracture NATO, and failed to secure significant territorial gains,” Biden added.
The president urged continued support for Ukraine, stressing its global significance. “We rallied 50 nations to back Ukraine, including support from Asia. Countries in Asia understand that what happens in Ukraine affects them too,” he said.
Biden credited his administration with ensuring Ukraine’s survival and independence, asserting, “Ukraine remains free and independent today, with a brighter future ahead, thanks to our efforts.”
Weakening Adversaries, Strengthening Alliances
Biden highlighted his administration’s efforts to weaken adversaries like Russia and Iran, citing Syria as a prime example. “If you need proof of a weakened Iran and Russia, look at Syria. Neither could maintain Assad’s grip on power,” Biden explained.
He also noted that alliances between authoritarian regimes, such as Iran, Russia, China, and North Korea, stem more from necessity than strength. “These alliances are signs of weakness, not dominance,” Biden said.
Building a Legacy for the Future
As Biden prepares to leave office, he emphasized the importance of maintaining the policies his administration established. “We’ve laid the foundation for the next administration to safeguard Ukraine’s future and uphold global stability,” he remarked.
At 82, Biden expressed confidence that his leadership has positioned America to succeed in the years ahead. However, his foreign policy legacy will likely be tested by the incoming administration of Donald Trump, whose protectionist approach contrasts sharply with Biden’s multilateral vision.
