Beijing Seeks Diplomatic Influence in Middle East Following Gaza Truce

Read Time:1 Minute, 9 Second

China’s diplomatic presence in the Middle East has intensified as Special Envoy Zhai Jun conducts meetings in Israel and Palestine in the wake of the Gaza ceasefire. While Beijing aims to establish itself as a significant mediator in the region’s future, its influence faces limitations due to Israel’s strong American alliance.

The diplomatic mission included talks with Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli foreign ministry head Eden Bar-Tal. Zhai expressed support for the ceasefire and hostage exchange while promoting Chinese-Israeli innovation partnerships. He also emphasized China’s continued backing of Palestinian sovereignty and endorsed a two-state resolution.

Though China has maintained its pro-Palestinian stance, it has cultivated economic partnerships with Israel over the past three decades. However, expert James Dorsey from Nanyang Technological University suggests Beijing’s diplomatic efforts may face hurdles, given Israel’s strategic preference for maintaining strong U.S. ties.

The ongoing U.S.-China strategic competition complicates Beijing’s relationship with Israel, particularly as Israel relies heavily on American military support and diplomatic protection. Nevertheless, China’s potential contribution to Gaza’s rebuilding efforts and its position on the U.N. Security Council could enhance its regional significance.

China has recently expanded its Middle Eastern diplomatic portfolio, successfully mediating between Saudi Arabia and Iran while hosting discussions among Palestinian groups. As the Gaza ceasefire continues, China’s diplomatic aspirations must navigate complex regional dynamics and established international partnerships.
