David Axelrod, a Democratic strategist, has issued a warning, stating that Democrats’ general enthusiasm for Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign might be the result of “irrational exuberance.” Axelrod cautions that the election is still extremely close despite Harris’s early victories, which include fundraising records and closing the gap with former President Donald Trump in the polls.
“She has a lot of momentum, but if you look at the polling, this is still a really tight race,” Axelrod stated. “This is going to be a hard fight for either side, based on the numbers we’re seeing right now.”
Axelrod noted that the Democratic Party’s present enthusiasm is the result of a change in attitude following a period of pessimism on November’s chances. “On the Democratic side of the aisle, there’s a lot of excessive optimism right now because there was dejection for a while about what November will hold. People now believe there is a chance, he said.
Even with this renewed hope, Axelrod stressed that Trump is still leading the race. Right now, this is unquestionably Trump’s campaign to lose. He is in the lead,” he said. “And in the majority of the states that are the front lines of combat, he is winning. They’re close enough for any candidate to win.”
Among the well-known Democrats calling on President Joe Biden to resign in the 2024 election is Axelrod. He hasn’t, however, totally grasped the enthusiasm that other party members have displayed for Harris. Axelrod issued a warning last week, stating that Trump is still a “pretty substantial favorite” against Harris.
After a virtual roll-call vote last week, Harris was formally recognized as the Democratic nominee. She is anticipated to select her vice presidential candidate prior to a Tuesday campaign rally. According to the most recent national polls aggregated by The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, Trump leads Harris by a razor-thin 1.1 points. Both candidates are inside the margin of error in battleground states. According to the most recent The Hill/Decision Desk HQ prediction model, Trump has a 56% chance of winning the presidency.
Axelrod’s admonishing words throughout the campaign underscore the difficulties Harris will face and the significance of not undervaluing the opposition in this hotly contested race.
