During the current Miami Open, Belarusian tennis prodigy Aryna Sabalenka boldly addressed the tragic loss of her former lover, Konstantin Koltsov. Authorities have determined that former NHL player Koltsov’s death in Miami on Monday was likely a suicide. World No. 2 Sabalenka used social media to share her sorrow and make a request for privacy during this difficult period.
Sabalenka expressed her sorrow at Koltsov’s death in a moving Instagram Story, highlighting the lasting effect it has had on her even if they are no longer together. She said, “Konstantin’s death is an unthinkable tragedy, and while we were no longer together, my heart is broken,” and asked that the public and his family respect their privacy while they deal with the loss.
While Sabalenka and Koltsov started dating in 2021, this is the first time that Sabalenka has acknowledged their breakup in public. Sabalenka is committed to her work and is continuing to compete in the Miami Open despite her personal struggles. Sabalenka is expected to fight against Paula Badosa of Spain, but she has remained focused on the court as seen by her intense practice sessions in all black. Visibly upset, former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki expressed her sympathy and promised to stand with Sabalenka. What she is going through is beyond my comprehension. What a horrible circumstance that is. It’s really difficult,” Wozniacki said, emphasizing the deep effect Koltsov’s death had on Sabalenka and others in her immediate vicinity.
