A class-action case against Amazon says the company lied to customers about the prices of its Fire TVs, which is unfair. The case, which was filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington, says that Amazon lied about the list prices of its Fire TVs to make discounts look bigger than they really were.
The lawsuit says Amazon had a “persistent and uniform scheme” to set high “fake list prices” for Fire TVs so buyers would think they were getting big discounts. It also says that Amazon didn’t give important information about when these sales happened and when the prices posted were actually in effect.
David Ramirez, who filed the case, says that these actions caused customers to spend more money than they would have if prices were shown correctly. The case also says that many Fire TVs have not been sold at the stated list prices for more than a year, which is against Washington’s Consumer Protection Act, which forbids dishonest business practices.
Ramirez wants both compensatory and punitive damages, as well as an order to stop Amazon from continuing what he says are unfair price practices. In a case similar to this one from 2021, Amazon agreed to pay $2 million in fines for making false price claims in California.
Amazon hasn’t said anything about the case yet.
