In Lucerne, Switzerland, Saint Peter’s Chapel has introduced an innovative way to explore spirituality—an AI-powered Jesus. Known as “Deus in Machina,” this project, part of the Swiss Saint Luke Society’s centennial celebration, allows visitors to engage in multilingual conversations with a theology-trained AI representation of Christ.
Located in the chapel’s confessional, the AI invites discussions on faith and spirituality, drawing interest from believers and skeptics worldwide. Marco Schmid, a theologian at the chapel, explained, “We aim to understand how people connect with an AI Jesus and what these interactions reveal.”
Since its August debut, the AI Jesus has attracted thousands of visitors, some traveling long distances to experience this fusion of faith and technology. Responses have been varied, with some finding it inspiring and others questioning the role of AI in religious practices.
