Two Ukrainian drones carried out a risky nocturnal raid on a significant oil refinery in southwest Russia, setting off a fire that has sparked worries about growing tensions between the two countries. According to preliminary reports, the refinery, which is controlled by the massive industrial player Lukoil and is situated in the Volograd region, was attacked by the SBU security service of Ukraine.
Images that appeared to capture the moment of the explosion during the assault were released by the local media site V1. Two separate explosions were heard during the incident, according to nearby residents.
But Russian officials played down how serious the strike was. “Last night, the air defence and electronic jamming repelled an attack by drones in the Volgograd region’s Kalachyovsky and Zakanalye districts,” Volgograd Governor Andrei Bocharov said in a Telegram post. He went on to say that one of the fallen drones caused a fire to break out at the Volgograd refinery, but that no injuries had been reported and that by AM, firemen had the fire under control.
This event is the most recent in a string of drone attacks by Ukraine in recent weeks that have targeted Russian oil infrastructure, which Kyiv believes are essential to the war effort of the Kremlin. “By hitting oil refineries working for the Russian military-industrial complex, we not only cut off the logistics of fuel supplies for enemy equipment but also reduce the filling of the Russian budget,” a Ukrainian source who spoke with Reuters detailed the tactic.
A major participant in the Russian oil and gas sector, Lukoil is referred to as “one of the leading companies” on its website. The drone strike occurred recently against their refinery, which is located south of Volgograd, around 214 miles from the Ukrainian border.
In retaliation, the Russian military asserted that it had used electronic jamming in the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, to either down or intercept four drones. The incident is adding to the already strained relations between Russia and Ukraine, and the international world is keeping a careful eye on the situation.
