Abercrombie & Fitch Ex-CEO Charged in Sex Trafficking Case

Read Time:1 Minute, 26 Second

Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries and two associates, Matt Smith and Jim Jacobson, were arrested Tuesday on federal sex trafficking charges. A 16-count indictment details allegations of an elaborate international sex trafficking operation that spanned over a decade.

Prosecutors allege the trio operated a sophisticated scheme that exploited young men by luring them with promises of modeling opportunities and career advancement in the fashion industry. The operation, which allegedly ran from 2008 for more than seven years, targeted vulnerable individuals identified in court documents as “John Does #1-15.”

According to the indictment, Jacobson served as a key recruiter, traveling internationally to scout potential victims and conducting what he termed as “tryouts.” The operation reportedly hosted events at various exclusive locations, including Jeffries’ Hamptons estate and venues in cities like London and Venice.

The case has particular significance given Jeffries’ former position as CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch from 1992 to 2014. This criminal case follows previous civil lawsuits, including one filed by former reality TV star David Bradberry, who alleged similar misconduct. His attorney, Brad Edwards, claimed the operation used the Abercrombie brand as a front for illicit activities.

The defendants were arrested in different locations – Jeffries in Florida and Smith in Wisconsin – and will face arraignment in Central Islip, New York. While Abercrombie & Fitch itself is not implicated in the criminal investigation, the case has raised questions about the company’s culture during Jeffries’ tenure.

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace emphasized the case’s significance in addressing how powerful individuals can exploit vulnerable people pursuing their dreams. Federal authorities continue to investigate and have urged other potential victims to come forward as they work to uncover the full scope of the operation.
