Amazing “Double Diamond Ring” Effect to Go Alongside the Total Eclipse in April

Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

Astronomers have revealed an extra-special treat for Central Texas sky watchers as excitement for the complete eclipse in April grows. Viewers in some locations can see the “double diamond ring” effect in addition to the breathtaking eclipse.

The breathtaking ring effect known as Baily’s Beads is caused by the moon’s uneven edge allowing the last rays of sunlight to flow through its valleys. The phenomenon was first reported by astronomer Francis Baily. Sometimes this phenomenon appears as two separate light sources, like a double diamond ring, at the moment when the sun sets and rises.

The specific location of this uncommon phenomenon’s visibility may now be predicted by specialists with the help of sophisticated lunar topographic data from NASA and Japanese lunar orbiters. Sky watchers can anticipate seeing this show across Central Texas, from Austin to Brady, and especially west of Fredericksburg and Kerrville. Visibility zones have been mapped out in detail so that eclipse fans can arrange their viewing experience appropriately.

Additional maps have been created for 14 locations across North America to direct viewers to areas where the double diamond ring effect will be noticeable for anyone traveling outside of Central Texas.

When watching the eclipse, it is imperative to use appropriate eye protection, such as solar eclipse glasses. For the two to four minutes of entire coverage, people in the path of totality can take off their protective gear, but they still need to proceed with caution. To prevent eye injury, viewers should immediately continue using their viewing equipment as soon as the sun begins to emerge.
