Pope Francis Rests After Acute Breathing Crises

Read Time:1 Minute, 11 Second

Pope Francis is resting after experiencing two acute breathing crises, the Vatican confirmed on Tuesday. The 88-year-old pontiff, hospitalized for double pneumonia, faced further setbacks Monday night, requiring noninvasive mechanical ventilation to aid his breathing.

Doctors at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic removed “copious” mucus secretions from his lungs using a camera-tipped tube and suction device. While lab tests showed no new bacterial infections, the mucus buildup was attributed to his ongoing battle with pneumonia.

The Vatican described Francis as alert and cooperative with medical staff but classified his prognosis as “guarded,” indicating he remains at risk. Doctors did not confirm if he is stable but referred to the crises in the past tense, suggesting they have been managed.

This marks a new challenge in the Pope’s recovery from a prolonged respiratory infection, now in its third week. Francis, who has chronic lung issues and had part of a lung removed in his youth, has been undergoing respiratory physiotherapy to improve lung function. However, weakened muscles have hindered his ability to clear fluid effectively.

No recent images or videos of the Pope have been released since his hospitalization on February 14, making this his longest absence in his 12-year papacy. The global Catholic community continues to pray for his recovery as he remains under close medical supervision.

Stay tuned for updates on Pope Francis’ health as the Vatican provides further details.
