President Donald Trump has issued a sharp warning to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, threatening additional tariffs on Canada in response to Trudeau’s criticism of U.S. trade policies. Trump’s fiery statement came after Trudeau labeled the proposed 25% tariff on Canadian goods as “dumb” and announced retaliatory measures targeting $155 billion worth of American products.
“Please explain to Governor Trudeau, of Canada, that when he puts on a Retaliatory Tariff on the U.S., our Reciprocal Tariff will immediately increase by a like amount!” Trump declared on social media. Since his reelection, Trump has provocatively referred to Trudeau as a “governor” of Canada, suggesting the country could become the “51st state.”
Trudeau, visibly emotional during a press conference, expressed frustration and defiance, vowing to protect Canadian interests. “We’re insulted, we’re angry, but we’re Canadian, which means we’re gonna stand up for each other, we’re gonna fight…and we’re gonna win,” he stated.
The escalating trade war could have significant economic repercussions. The U.S. imported $412 billion worth of Canadian goods in 2024, making Canada a critical trade partner. Analysts warn that prolonged tensions could harm both economies, with no clear winners in sight.
