Ukrainian soldiers from the 92nd Assault Brigade have called for compromises on both sides as they reflect on the recent public clash between US President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The spat, which unfolded in the Oval Office, saw Trump accusing Zelenskyy of ingratitude, escalating tensions between the two nations.
A soldier nicknamed “Edo” told the Associated Press that many politicians are unaware of the realities on the ground, leading to conflicts like the one between Trump and Zelenskyy. Edo emphasized that soldiers should focus on fighting, while politicians must negotiate to ensure troops have the resources needed to defend Ukraine. He praised Zelenskyy’s efforts, stating, “I completely stand with the Supreme Commander-in-Chief.”
Another soldier, with the callsign “DSHB,” expressed understanding of the US perspective but warned that cutting support to Ukraine would severely impact Kyiv’s ability to defend itself. “Without support, it will be hard. Not just hard, but very hard,” he said.
The soldiers’ reflections come as Zelenskyy continues to seek international backing. On Saturday, he arrived in London for a summit hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, where the UK announced a £2.6 billion (€3.15 billion) loan to bolster Ukraine’s defenses. The loan is part of a broader G7 initiative established last year.
A third soldier highlighted the need for mutual compromises, stressing that Ukraine’s security is crucial not only for Europe but also for the US. “If this aggression in Ukraine isn’t stopped, the aggressor will move towards the borders of Europe. And there, I think, Europe will regret not helping us,” he said.
The London summit, attended by leaders from France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, and other European nations, underscores the international community’s focus on supporting Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, is also expected to participate.
As the conflict continues, Ukrainian soldiers remain steadfast in their resolve, urging global leaders to prioritize diplomacy and cooperation. Zelenskyy, meanwhile, has expressed gratitude for international support, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong relations with Washington and other allies.
The ongoing dialogue between Ukraine and its partners highlights the delicate balance of military strategy and diplomatic negotiations, with soldiers on the frontlines reminding the world of the human cost of political discord.
