In a groundbreaking development, the FBI has discovered approximately 2,400 previously undisclosed files related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This revelation comes after former President Donald Trump issued an executive order demanding the release of all records tied to the 1963 assassination. The newly uncovered documents, part of a 14,000-page collection, were never submitted to a 1990s review board tasked with examining evidence in the case.
The existence of these files, first reported by Axios, was disclosed by intelligence agencies on Friday as part of ongoing efforts to declassify remaining redacted evidence. The discovery has reignited public interest in one of the most debated events in American history, fueling speculation about what the files might reveal.
Jefferson Morley, a prominent JFK assassination expert, described the find as “huge,” emphasizing the FBI’s commitment to transparency. Meanwhile, Gerald Leo Posner, an author specializing in the case, suggested the discovery raises questions about whether other agencies are withholding additional documents. “No one will ever agree that all of the information has been released,” Posner noted, highlighting the enduring mystery surrounding Kennedy’s death.
The release of these files aligns with the 1992 President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act, which mandated that all government documents related to the assassination be made public by October 2017. However, national security and privacy concerns have repeatedly delayed full disclosure. During his presidency, Trump initially pledged to release 15,000 redacted documents but reportedly faced pushback from then-CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
President Joe Biden has since released a portion of the remaining files, reducing the number of withheld documents to 3,500. However, the deadline for their release was extended due to pandemic-related delays. The latest discovery underscores the complexity of the case and the government’s cautious approach to declassification.
The JFK assassination has long been a breeding ground for conspiracy theories, with many questioning the official narrative that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., JFK’s nephew and a prominent figure in the Biden administration, has even alleged CIA involvement in his uncle’s death. In 2023, he launched a petition urging the Biden administration to release the remaining records, arguing it would help restore public trust in the government.
